Alpha Stirling engine relates to external combustion engines.it means the ability to work from any heat sources. The engine operation principles are based on the circulation of air between the areas of heating and cooling. This leads to a change of volume and pressure inside the cylinder, whereby the piston motion occurs.

Usually Stirling engines have two pistons. One is to move the gas between the areas of heating and cooling. The second one is a working piston and serves to convert the air pressure energy into mechanical motion. This engine also has a cylinder filled with a porous mass, which is used to save energy and to transfer it to gases that circulate inside the system.

The beta-Stirling engine as its analog engine alpha- Stirling , is an external combustion engine. That allows it to work on any kind of fuel and even solar energy.

A distinctive feature of beta-Stirling engine is that it has only one cylinder. Displacing and working pistons are on the same axis inside the cylinder. The rule of pistons motion is determined by the peculiarities of two gears system and a rhombic drive construction.

This model of steam engine was the most common in past. The energy of the steam pressure is converted into the rotation of the flywheel by the piston. The moving of the flywheel alters the position of the valve, which redirects a portion of steam in one of cylinder parts and opens the other part to emit exhaust steam.

In theory, such type of engines was mounted on locomotives. Now such devices can be found, perhaps, in museums or as a steam-punk attributes.

Green Steam engine, in my opinion, is still quite exotic . The principle of operation has been taken from the inventor site (http://www.greensteamengine.com) Robert Green.

The engine consists of:

  • a certain number of cylinders ( 2 , 3, 4 ... ) , mounted on ball-basis, which allows them to move freely flowing steam;
  • one piston in each cylinder;
  • nipple regulating the steam supply and emissions;
  • a flexible rod that restrains triangle hinges from the rotation after the shaft;
  • motor shaft;

Despite the simplicity and cheapness , the engines of this type can operate at relatively low pressure steam.

This engine monitoring inspired me for this site creation. Its beauty and originality really fascinate. Moreover the observation of helicopter maneuvers in the sky arises the desire to understand how it works and lets the pilot perform such miracles.

All the secret of mechanism is in the possibility of changing each propeller blade’s angle in accordance of certain rule. So this creates pressure drops from different sides of helicopter corps. It allows helicopter to move not just back and forth but also sideways and even form loop paths. To describe by words how this harmonized system of helicopter rotor is achieved is a waste of time. Here is another example, of a fairly common Stirling engine representative. It became widespread for the reason that having a large area of ​​heating and cooling it can work even been put on a mug of coffee or a piece of ice. The demo of its functioning at small temperature differences is very impressive.

The principle of operation is based on the movement of hot air from the heating sphere to the cooling sphere and vice versa by displacing (large) piston. This causes an increase or decrease of pressure inside the system. The change of pressure, in turn, moves the working (smaller) piston.

The peculiarity of this engine is that its cylinder is not fixed statically, but swings in accordance to the wheel rotation.

As you can see on the model in a transparent mode, the cylinder is connected to the source by the right aperture and by the left to the exhaust pipe. In the other extreme position, the apertures are interchanged.

You can find a lot of practical implementations of steam engines with oscillating cylinder in the Internet. That’s because of the simplicity of its construction.

This is my first model designed for the money.

Secateurs, is the some type of the scissors for a plants cutting. This pruner has a quite interesting mechanism. It's the main reason why this secateurs was choosen for creation.

This walking mechanism is an extremely spectacular type of kinetic sculptures. Theo Jansen deals with the development of such real mechanisms. I recommend to surf online videos with these walking mechanisms. They are simply incredible.

There are only six legs in my virtual 3D model. This makes the process of movement entertaining and visual at the same time. More legs can cause the loss of visibility.
